Back in November, I talked about Washington Capitals Alexander Semin and his comments about Sidney Crosby in an interview with a Russian newspaper.
Just to recap, Semin stated that he doesn’t see what’s so special about Crosby. He said Patrick Kane is more fun to watch and that any player, if he is promoted enough, will be a star.
I wasn’t sure then and I’m still not sure what Semin was trying to accomplish with those comments. He certainly didn’t make any fans in Pittsburgh as he will find out on January 14 at Mellon Arena if he returns from his back injury and is playing in that game. Little tidbits like that one aren’t easily forgotten by Pens fans. Semin might be the recipient of more boos that night that the “other” Alexander who will be there.
But whether on the ice or on injured reserve, Semin just keeps talking. This time he told a Russian newspaper what he thinks about women playing hockey. “It’s not women’s work,” he said. HUH???
So what is “women’s work” in your opinion, Alexander? Cooking and cleaning and making life better for you? I think when the ladies in Pittsburgh hear this comment, the boos will be twice as loud and higher-pitched! If word gets around, this could happen in other arenas too where knowledgeable female fans will take those comments to heart.
Alexander, have you seen the numbers of female hockey fans? Do you know how much money female fans spend on NHL merchandise? Do you know how much they know about the game? Do you know that they enjoy playing the sport every bit as much as any male fan? Do you know how much they care about their teams?
Again, as I said the last time I mentioned Mr. Semin, he is entitled to his opinion. After his Crosby comments, the Caps owner, Ted Leonsis, tried to downplay Semin’s comments, saying things were “lost in translation”. Others seemed to think Semin was misquoted somehow. But when asked by a reporter if he would like to talk about it and explain his comments, Semin “smirked and said no.”
Maybe Christine Simpson could ask him about his “not women’s work” comments the next time the Caps play a game on Versus! Like many of you, I’d like to hear him explain the comment.
