Why did the Caps Alexander Semin publicly single out the Pens Sidney Crosby?  Pens writer, Jan Snyder ponders Semin’s motivation, and reminds him that there is plenty of room for stars in the NHL’s sky.

It's hard not to call Sidney a special player. Unless of course you're Alexander Semin

Maybe Caps’ player Alexander Semin dressed up as the Grinch for Halloween. In an interview on October 31, Semin stated that he doesn’t see what’s so special about Sidney Crosby.  He says Patrick Kane is more fun to watch.  Patrick Kane is plenty of fun to watch.  If you haven’t seen a Blackhawks game this season, be sure to catch one – they are very entertaining.  Semin said that any player, if he is promoted enough, will be a star.

Okay, here are my questions about Semin’s comments:

  1. Does Alexander realize that he is playing in a North American league where it’s natural and normal that one of the faces of the game would be a North American player?
  2. Was Alexander just trying to stir the pot for the Caps/Pens rivalry?
  3. Is Alexander upset that he isn’t even the biggest star on his own team?
  4. Does he realize that although he has 16 points, Crosby is right behind him at 15, while Malkin leads everybody with 18?  Ovechkin is off to a slow start with only 5 points, but we know that won’t last long.
  5. Is his gripe really with the NHL promotion department and not with Crosby?

Of course, Alexander is certainly entitled to his opinion.  And he and Ovechkin are certainly great, exciting offensive players.  Although Ovechkin and Malkin seem to have some off the ice issues that boil over on the ice as well, I don’t think Semin’s comments will bait Crosby into anything.  He’s way too politically correct to get into a war of words with Semin.  He’ll go about his business and play the way he always plays.

Gosh, Semin can’t even say that his team isn’t getting any attention.  The hockey preview issue of ESPN the Magazine featured the Caps, with Ovechkin as the President no less, on several pages.  They are a high-profile, high-flying, high-scoring team.  I don’t think they are being ignored and I have no idea why Semin began this discussion.  But I sure can’t wait for the next Caps/Pens game (January 14, Mellon Arena).

By then, Semin could be the NHL’s leading scorer.  So could Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin or lots of other players.  Alexander, you’re a great young player and you will be a star.  Look up at the heavens – there is plenty of room for stars, just like in the NHL.

C’mon, guys, can’t we just play hockey?

Have you noticed how many games are finishing with scores of 5-0, 6-0, 7-0 or else are 4-3, 5-4, 3-2 in shootouts?  I’m not sure why the blowouts are happening.  Is it just the systems teams are playing?  Is it because we’re still early on in the season?  I think I like the shootout scores better.  I hate to see teams that fight hard to come back lose in a shootout, but I still think this is a much better way to end a game and have a result.  I have no problem whatsoever with shootouts.
