This weekend, Hockey Canada announced Steve Yzerman as the new executive director of Team Canada's mens hockey team. This takes Lisa back to 2002, and a must see DVD.

Steve Yzerman is the one. Canadians will count on him to make only the right decisions for Canada’s Men’s Olympic Ice Hockey team leading up to February 2010. It will be his butt if Canada doesn’t pull off the gold medal win on Canadian soil.

No pressure in that gig, huh?

But like most fans of this winged wheeled hockey icon, I have full confidence that Steve Yzerman and his hockey associates (Ken Holland, Kevin Lowe and Doug Armstrong) will ice a team that meshes instantly and will then steam roll through the competition. And competition there will be.

This is exciting stuff for hockey fans. Who doesn’t love international competition? So this Canadian hockey fan is going back in time. I’m skipping 2006 in Torino; and going straight back to Salt Lake City, 2002.  My time travel machine is my DVD player, and the DVD: Gold Rush 2002.

This is a fascinating documentary following Wayne Gretzky and friends as he assembled Canada’s 2002 Olympic Gold medal Squad. I bought it the second it was available back in 2002.

Anyone interested in the player personnel decisions Yzerman will be facing, should definitely check out this DVD. The film makers cover that process, plus training camps, highlights from each game and finally Team Canada posing with gold medals and yellow flowers. Viewers get the whole story of building a winning team in a tidy 105 minutes.

Okay, now I am wistful for 2002. It was an epic year for me too. However, I am heading into more epic times leading up to the 2010 Winter Olympics here in Vancouver.

Stay tuned for my 2010 stories...

Happy Hockey!
