Club Scarlet slogan...sharing your passion for the game

Last week the Washington Capitals launched a new club for their growing female hockey fan base, and in keeping with the popularity of the Caps red uniforms, it is appropriately called Club Scarlet.

From the perspective of a woman whose dedicated most of the last seven years trying to break down age old barriers that keep women out of the loop on the game and the business, I can only say...this has been a long time coming...wooohooo! The Club Scarlet Website is the first NHL team website to host a permanent place for content that serves the female fans in their market.

The Capitals are touting the club as the first hockey club for female fans. Club Scarlet is actually the second, and there is certainly nothing wrong with being number two. The Pittsburgh Penguins launched their Hockey n' Heels club at the beginning of this hockey season, and are about to host the fifth event. (Hockeyandhighheels.com was pleased to supply copies of Hockey & High Heels- a Different Kind of Hockey Book for the guests).

Club Scarlet's website offers hockey fans a news page, an events page, blogs, a hockey 101 section, and a place to showcase Washington Capital players. The Hockey 101 section provides written content covering player positions, hockey terminology, and a few hockey facts and trivia. The video portion is a blend of instructional video and segments on some of the players off ice pursuits and interests.

So far we’ve met one blogger, Leslie Silvey (aka Hockey Mom VA). Silvey, a writer, dedicated hockey mom, Caps fan, and career woman, has hosted her own hockey blog covering the Washington Capitals for about a year now. Not long after she launched her Hockeymom VA blog, Washington capitals owner, Ted Leonis recognized Silvey’s talent and added her link to his own website’s home page. On top of all of that, Silvey is also the co owner of Fan Bangles, of a line of hockey inspired jewelry.  I had the pleasure of being interviewed by her last fall, and have kept in touch via email and phone chats.

Capitals Fan Bangle

Overall, Club Scarlet’s website is a stylish presentation, and I am sure we can expect even more great content and features as the website evolves to serve its members and visitors. Congratulations is in order to the Washington Capitals Hockey Club!!!

And the controversy...

With every new option available to female hockey fans and female sports fans in general, I expect to see some form of backlash against the venture. It’s sad but true: female hockey fans continue to be one of the most misunderstood group sports fans in the world. And in the case of Club Scarlet, it’s been business as usual for the negative collective...

In part two, columnist Lisa Ovens tackles the criticism lobbed by hockey fan elitists out there so quick to judge the website, the club and the fans who love it...

Stay Tuned....
