During this year’s playoffs, I had the opportunity to talk a little hockey with the popular Satellite Hot Stove panelist for Hockey Night in Canada, Scott Morrison.

Viewers of Hockey Night in Canada, which has run on CBC since 1952, can catch pundit Scott Morrison in between periods on the segment called “Satellite Hot Stove”. He is one of the panelists who discuss the latest happenings in the hockey world each week. Viewers in the United States who have the Center Ice package via cable channels have become great fans of the show too.
Morrison is a 26-year veteran hockey journalist and recipient of the Hockey Hall of Fame’s 2006 Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award. In addition to his appearances on the show, he contributes about a dozen pre-game and intermission features and writes for cbcsports.ca. He co-hosts a weekly Hockey Night in Canada radio hockey show for Sirius Satellite Radio, and in his spare time, he writes books under the HNIC banner. Morrison served two terms as president of the Professional Hockey Writer’s Association. His latest book, By the Numbers, tells the player’s stories of how and why they choose their jersey numbers.

“Working on the book brought back a lot of memories. The interesting stories and tidbits I was able to find along the way made it fun to do,” Morrison said.
He grew up in Toronto playing goal as a boy. Frank Mahavalich was his hero and he liked Bernie Parent. “Now they are all butterfly goalies, they have dramatically changed their style. There aren’t many stand up guys left,” he said.
Morrison has written a full shelf of books including one on the 1987 Canada Cup, one covering Wayne Gretzky, a hockey guide, a fantasy guide and even a book about Canadian golfer Mike Weir.
“Covering the ’87 Canada Cup was wonderful and I had the opportunity to cover the great Oiler games in the ‘80s and Pittsburgh in the ‘90s. There’s no shortage of good memories,” he said. “I’ve got my finger in all the pies, and that’s always a good thing, because it keeps me busy and is enjoyable. I hadn’t gotten away from the hockey world over the years, but I had branched out into more management as a newspaper sports editor for a dozen years then overseeing the hockey at Sportsnet. It’s kind of nice to get back to the roots of hockey.”
Stay tuned for Part two...Scott talks about how he stays in the loop of all things hockey and offers his thoughts on a few teams, including the Nashville Predators, the Washington Capitals, and the Dallas Stars.
